My Little Chickadees

Chickadee - Poecile atricapillus

Viewed from my balcony

I have two chickadees that come to my feeder all and everyday. They bring their young to feed in spring but, so far, I have not had any luck with the nest box.

Every spring they, very industriously, fly in and out of the nest box with nesting materials but, apart for three eggs one spring, nothing.

The eggs had been abandoned.

There are other birds that come to my feeder, notably the Hairy Woodpecker and the Flicker

Hairy woodpecker (Picoides villosus)

Flicker (Woodpecker - Colaptes auratus)

Junco’s would like to fly to and perch on the feeder but only one seems to have mastered the art.

To the Chickadee it is no problem at all.

Ma?

Where did it go?

  1. Lovely! The chickadee must be one of my favourite birds...

We have had no birds, other than a woodpecker, for many days until this morning when we had an energetic flock of chickadees flitting through the trees and landing on the railings. After they moved on a flock of pine siskines moved in to see what they had left!

Birds sure put the life into the great outdoors!
